North Korea:  Did You Know?

_ Three million people have died from starvation in North Korea since the famine that started in the 1990s.

         1990년대 기근이 시작된 이래 3백만 명이 북한에서 굶어 죽었다.

_ Over two hundred thousand North Korean men, women AND children are held in political prison camps.  Children are not only sent to these camps but are born there and remain there.

         20여만 명 이상의 북한남자와 여자 그리고 어린이들이 정치범 감옥들에 수용돼 있다. 어린이들도 이 수용소에 보내질 뿐만 아니라 거기서 낳고 그대로 있게 된다.

_ Three generations of a family are sent to the political prison camps if just one member is accused of a “crime.” Crimes include listening to a foreign radio broadcast, believing in God, not properly showing respect to Dear Leader Kim Jong-il, or repeatedly trying to flee the country.

         가족 중 한 사람만 범죄자가 되면 그 가족의 3대가 정치범 수용소들에 보내진다. 범죄에는 외국 라디오를 듣는 것, 신을 믿는 것, 지도자 김정일 찬양에 소홀 하거나  탈북을 계속하려는 것 등이 포함된다.  

_ Between four hundred thousand and one million people have died in these political prison camps where prisoners are worked to death and starved to death.

         40만에서 100백만 명 사이의 사람들이 이러한 정치범 범수용소들에서 강제노동과 굶주림으로 죽어 갔다. 

_ Approximately, 500,000 North Koreans have crossed the border into China escaping famine-like conditions in their homeland.

         약 50만의 북한인들이 그들 고향의 기근과 같은 상황을 피해 중국으로 국경을 넘어갔다.

_ Refusing to acknowledge that these refugees will be subjected to torture, detention and execution if they are forced back to North Korea, Chinese authorities continue to forcibly repatriate the refugees back to North Korea.

         이 난민들이 북한으로 돌려 보내지게 되면 고문을 받고 구속되며  사형을 당한다는 사실을 외면하면서, 중국 당국은 이 난민들을 북한으로 강제 송환하고 있다.  

_ As a result of their dangerous and precarious position, North Korean male refugees become slave laborers in China, while female refugees are subjected to sexual trafficking sold to brothels or to Chinese “husbands” as there is a shortage of Chinese women due to China’s one child policy. Approximately, 80% of North Korea females have been “sold” and victimized by human traffickers.

         탈북인들의 위험하고 불안정한 처지의 결과로, 탈북 남자들은 중국의 노예노동자가 되고, 여자들은 매음굴로 팔리거나 한 아이만 갖는 정책으로 여자가 부족한 중국 남편들에게 팔려간다. 약 80퍼센트의 탈북 여성들이 인간밀매꾼들에 의해 팔리거나 희생이 되고 있다.   

_ The international community has sent enough food and economic assistance to feed every family at risk in North Korea, yet starvation continues because Kim Jong-il uses international assistance as a weapon against his own people feeding his elites and diverting finances for his nuclear program.

         국제사회가 북한에서 위험에 처한 가족들을 먹일 식량과 경제원조를 하고 있음에도, 굶주림은 계속되고 있는데 이는 김정일이 국제원조를 자국민을 억압하는 무기로 쓰며 그의 측근들만 챙기고 핵무기 개발을 위한 자금으로 전용하기 때문이다.             

_ North Koreans are not the only ones suffering under the Kim Jong-il regime: After years of denial, North Korea finally admitted in 2002 to the abduction of thirteen Japanese citizens, including a thirteen year old girl, Megumi Yokota. Since that time the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea (AFVKN) and the National Association for the Rescue of Japanese Kidnapped by North Korea (NARKN) have identified that North Korea abducted citizens from at least 12 different countries and there may in fact be hundreds of abductees.

         북한 사람들만 김정일 체제하에서 고통당하는 것이 아니다. 수년간 부인한 후에 북한은 13세 소녀 매구미 요코타를 포함하여 13명의 일본국민을 납치했음을 2002에야 결국 시인했다. 그 이후 납북 희생자 가족 연합과  납북 일본인 구출 전국 연합이 북한이 적어도 12개 나라에서 수백 명을 납치 한 것을 밝혀냈다.
